Eating well in Santa Barbara is not difficult. The produce is local, the wine is exceptional, and the chefs here take their ingredients seriously. But with so many options — especially around the Funk Zone, Montecito, and State Street — it can be hard to know where to actually go. These are the restaurants I recommend, eat at regularly, and feel confident sending people to.
Bouchon Santa Barbara
One of Santa Barbara’s most celebrated dining rooms, Bouchon has been a cornerstone of the local restaurant scene for decades — and it still earns it. The menu is California wine country cuisine at its best: thoughtful, ingredient-driven, and designed to pair beautifully with the local wines. The setting is warm and convivial without being loud. This is my go-to recommendation for a special dinner in Santa Barbara, especially for anyone who wants to experience what the wine country dining scene actually feels like here.
The Lark
In the heart of the Funk Zone, The Lark is the kind of restaurant that defines what modern Santa Barbara dining looks like. The space is stunning — a converted fish market with high ceilings, communal tables, and an energy that feels alive without being chaotic. The menu features locally-sourced small plates and larger share dishes that rotate with the seasons. Go with a group, order everything that sounds good, and let the evening unfold. This is one of the best dining experiences in the city.
Lucky Penny
From the same team behind The Lark, Lucky Penny is the Funk Zone’s best casual spot. Wood-fired pizzas and a fantastic rotating vegetable menu make it an easy choice for a laid-back dinner or late lunch. The natural wine list is excellent, the staff is knowledgeable without being precious about it, and the outdoor patio is one of the better places to spend a warm Santa Barbara evening. Don’t skip the seasonal salads.
Sama Sama Kitchen
Sama Sama is one of those places that becomes an instant favorite. Southeast Asian-inspired small plates with local California ingredients — bold flavors, beautiful presentations, and a warmth to the space that makes you want to stay through every course. It’s creative without being gimmicky, and the cocktails are exceptional. This is one I bring out-of-town guests to when I want to show them what Santa Barbara is capable of beyond the expected.
Convivo
Convivo brings coastal Italian to the Funk Zone in the best possible way. Hand-made pasta, wood-fired dishes, and an Italian wine list that would be impressive anywhere. The dining room has a romantic, candlelit quality that makes it a perfect choice for date nights or slower, more memorable evenings. The pasta is genuinely excellent — order as much of it as you can reasonably justify.
