I’ve stayed in a lot of hotels. Chain hotels, resort hotels, hotels with stunning views and hotels with questionable pillows. And through all of it, I’ve come back to the same conclusion: boutique hotels win almost every time. There’s a quality of intention with boutique properties that you don’t often find in larger brands — a sense that someone actually cared about the details. These are the boutique hotels that have stayed with me long after checkout.
What Makes a Boutique Hotel Worth It
When I evaluate a boutique hotel, I’m looking for a few things: Does it feel like it belongs where it is, or does it feel dropped in from somewhere else? Are the details considered — the lighting, the linens, the way the bathroom is laid out? Is the service warm without being scripted? And most importantly — when you wake up and look around, does it make you feel like you’re somewhere worth being? The best boutique hotels pass all of those tests.
In Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara has some of California’s most beautiful boutique properties. Belmond El Encanto in the hills above town is one of the finest hotels I’ve ever set foot in — the gardens, the views, the quiet luxury of it. Hotel Californian in the Funk Zone has a completely different energy: dark, romantic, and beautifully designed. The Inn of the Spanish Garden, tucked just off State Street, feels like a private courtyard you’ve stumbled into. All three are exceptional, and I’ve seen firsthand how much they mean to guests on special trips.
In Lake Tahoe
The Tahoe boutique hotel market is smaller but has a few genuinely wonderful properties. Edgewood Tahoe on the South Shore delivers a rare combination of lakefront access, mountain views, and genuinely thoughtful service. For a more intimate, mountain-lodge feel, Plumpjack Squaw Valley Inn near Olympic Valley is one of my consistent recommendations — especially for wine lovers or anyone who wants to be close to the slopes with something that actually feels special. The Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe at Northstar is technically a larger brand but operates with a boutique sensibility at the property level.
How I Book Boutique Hotels Differently
