Boathouse at Hendry's Beach
Where Every Meal Comes With an Ocean View
Published by Isdahl Collective
Some restaurants are all about the food. Others are all about the view.
The Boathouse at Hendry's Beach is one of the few places in Santa Barbara where you truly get both.
Whether you're grabbing breakfast after a morning beach walk, meeting friends for lunch, or watching the sun dip below the Pacific during dinner, the Boathouse has become one of those places I find myself recommending over and over again.
A Front-Row Seat to the Pacific
There's something special about dining with your toes practically in the sand.
Perched directly above Hendry's Beach, the restaurant offers uninterrupted views of the ocean, making it one of the most scenic dining experiences in Santa Barbara. Depending on where you're seated, you'll have a front-row view of surfers paddling out, dogs playing along the shoreline, and dolphins occasionally making an appearance offshore.
It's the kind of place where people naturally slow down.
My Experience
I recently stopped by for dinner, and it reminded me why this restaurant has remained a local favorite for years.
As the evening light settled over the water, the atmosphere became just as memorable as the meal itself. The combination of fresh coastal air, the sound of waves below, and a relaxed California vibe makes it feel less like simply going out to dinner and more like spending an evening at the beach—with great food included.
If you're visiting Santa Barbara for the first time, this is exactly the type of restaurant that captures what dining here is all about.
What to Order
The menu changes with the seasons, but you'll always find a mix of fresh seafood, California-inspired dishes, craft cocktails, and one of the city's most popular brunch menus. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all served daily, making it just as popular for morning coffee as it is for sunset dinners.
Whatever you choose, the setting is what you'll remember most.
Explore Before or After Dinner
One of the best parts about dining here is everything surrounding it.
Take a walk along Hendry's Beach before your reservation, watch the sunset from the shoreline, or head up to Douglas Family Preserve for panoramic views of the Santa Barbara coastline. If you're bringing your dog, the beach is also one of the area's favorite spots for locals with four-legged companions.
It's easy to turn dinner into an entire afternoon.
When to Go
While breakfast and brunch are excellent, my favorite time to visit is about an hour before sunset.
The golden light reflecting off the water, the relaxed pace of the beach, and the changing colors of the sky create one of the most memorable dining experiences in Santa Barbara.
If you're visiting on a weekend or during the summer, I'd recommend arriving early or making a reservation whenever possible.

One of the things I love most about Santa Barbara is that some of its best experiences are incredibly simple.
A walk along the beach. Fresh seafood. Good conversation. Watching the sun disappear into the Pacific.
The Boathouse at Hendry's Beach brings all of those together in one place, and that's why it's a restaurant I'll continue recommending to anyone looking to experience Santa Barbara like a local.
