Best Coffee Shops in Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara has one of the best independent coffee scenes in California. Walk almost any block downtown or venture into Montecito, and you’ll find beautifully designed cafes with serious craft behind the cup. Whether you need a quiet place to work, a scenic spot for a morning ritual, or the best flat white before a beach day, this list covers all of it.
These are the coffee shops I keep coming back to — and a few that have become essential stops whenever I’m in town.
Handlebar Coffee Roasters
Handlebar is the gold standard for coffee in Santa Barbara. They roast their own beans and take the craft seriously without being precious about it. The State Street location has a warm, relaxed energy — comfortable enough to settle in for hours, and the espresso drinks are consistently some of the best you’ll find anywhere on the Central Coast. Their cold brew is exceptional. If you’re only going to one coffee shop in Santa Barbara, make it this one.
Dune Coffee Roasters
Dune is a local institution with multiple locations around the city. The quality is reliably excellent — thoughtful sourcing, skilled baristas, and a rotating menu of single-origin options that rewards repeat visits. The Anacapa Street location has a calm, neighborhood feel that’s perfect for a slow morning. Their pour-overs are not to be missed.
The French Press
A Santa Barbara staple on De La Guerra Street. The French Press has been around long enough to feel like part of the city’s fabric. Great coffee, strong pastry game, and a cozy interior that draws a loyal mix of regulars. If you’re looking for the kind of coffee shop where everyone seems to know each other, this is it.
Renaud’s Patisserie & Bistro
Technically a French bakery, but the coffee program at Renaud’s is excellent — and pairing it with one of their croissants is one of the best simple pleasures Santa Barbara has to offer. The Loreto Plaza location is particularly lovely in the morning. Arrive early; the croissants sell out.
Mojo Coffee
A smaller, neighborhood-feel shop tucked near State Street with a dedicated following. Mojo is the kind of place that attracts creative, quiet regulars. The coffee is good, the space is unpretentious, and it tends to be a bit less crowded than some of the bigger names.
Cajé Coffee
A relative newcomer that’s quickly become a favorite. Cajé has a clean, thoughtful aesthetic and a menu that balances classic drinks with a few interesting seasonal offerings. The space is beautiful — the kind of place that photographs well but also genuinely feels good to sit in.

I tend to rotate between Handlebar and Dune on most mornings, but each of these shops has something distinct to offer. If you’re visiting for a weekend, I’d suggest starting your first morning at Handlebar and exploring from there.
